Situated atop a small hill, Suitengu Shrine offers a panoramic view of Otaru city and its harbor. Unless it’s during the shrine’s festival, it’s unlikely to be crowded here. Parking is also available.

Just below, you’ll find the Otaru St. John’s Church, so you’ll likely pass by it on your way here.

Suitengu Shrine was originally built in 1859. The current buildings, comprising the Honden (main hall), Chuden (middle hall), and Haiden (front hall), were constructed in 1919 in the Gongen-zukuri style. Situated on a hill, Suitengu offers a splendid view overlooking Otaru Port. It is renowned as one of the most beautiful shrines in Otaru and was designated as a historical building by the city in 1994.
