Hakodate Jomon Culture Center

The Hakodate Jomon Culture Center is located in Usujiri-cho, Hakodate approximately a one-hour drive away. This museum is dedicated to showcasing the Jomon culture of Hokkaido. It houses Hokkaido’s only national treasure, the Chuku Dogu (中空土偶), a doll discovered as burial goods.

Surrounding the museum are 91 Jomon period archaeological sites, including those in Minamikayabe facing Funkawan Gulf. These sites contain culturally significant artifacts and are currently on the tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status due to their importance and value. It is anticipated that this area may soon be designated as a World Heritage site.
